Ara Pacis
The Museum of Ara Pacis was opened to the public this month. It is located along the Tiber River, near the Ponte Cavour.
The Museum is designed to house the ancient relic, the Ara Pacis Augustae, a sacrificial altar dating to 9 B.C. which was created to commemorate the great peace after the Gallic and Spanish campaigns. The Ara consists of a rectangular enclosure inside of which is found the actual altar.
The altar was built along the Via Flaminia, but the Tiber’s floods caused that it was buried and utterly forgotten. In 1938 the Ara Pacis was rescued and placed in a pavilon, right now it is located in a new building which has been projected in order to preserve the monument.
The Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday form 9.00am to 7.00pm Closed on Mondays
All of you who enjoy the bohemian art of Amedeo Modigliani need to come to Rome to see the great exhibition at Museo Vittoriano in Rome.
This week has seen a great improvement in temperatures over the city and with the sun out and shining there is definately an increase in number of visitors to the city. With a max of 22 degrees this is certainly the best time of the year to visit the eternal city, as the sun is out and warm making it possible to make the most of the outdoor cafes and ice cream parlours without the intense humidity of the summer months. The great weather will be especially appreciated today the 2nd April as the Vatican hosts the anniversary of the death of Pope Giovanni Paolo II with thousands of pilgrims arriving in Rome during the past few days to pay their respect.
