The Swiss Guard is a small force responsible for the security of the Apostolic Palace, the entrances to the Vatican City and the safety of the Pope. Its official language is German. After 13 May 1981 when assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II took place, a much stronger emphasis has been made on the Swiss Guards’ functional, non-ceremonial roles.
This has included extended training in unarmed combat and with special pistols and submachine-guns. And while you are here in Rome we suggest you to stay with us in a central location close to to the Vatican and all the major sights of the city.
