GIRO D’ITALIA 2009: BACK TO ROME
Cycling is definitely a popular sport in Italy and its annual race, the Giro d’Italia will begin this year on the 9th of May in Venice and will determine its winner in the city of Rome on the 31st of May, including two dates in Austria. This year the race will be celebrating its 100th year and in lieu of this, Lance Armstrong will be racing after 3 years of retirement with his aim to not only to add more victories to his amazing career but to continue to promote his foundation Live Strong, a foundation created to win the battle against cancer.
The last 15.3 kilometers of the race will held in Rome beginning at Fori Imperiali, continuing to Porta Pia (near Hotel des Artistes), Via Vittorio Veneto, Via Della Concilliazione, back to Piazza Del Popolo, through Piazza Venezia finishing where they began, at the Fori Imperiali. The race has had a finish line in Rome only in the years of 1911 and 1950 and usually finishes in Milan. However, this year, the year the race celebrates its 100th year; the finish line has returned to the beautiful city of Rome and is an event that everyone is waiting for!
