A RED ROSE PETALS SHOWER IN THE PANTHEON ON MAY 24TH!

A RED ROSE PETALS SHOWER IN THE PANTHEON ON MAY 24TH!

An impressive two-thousand years old celebration will take place on Sunday May 24th inside the Pantheon, one of the most important monuments located in the heart of Rome.
Born as a pagan temple, the Pantheon was converted into the catholic Church of Santa Maria dei Martiri several centuries ago, and from the time of the earliest Christian communities it hosts once a year a special liturgy on Pentecost Sunday: a rain of red rose petals will be poured from the top hole in the ceiling, the architectural wonder that made the Pantheon so famous all over the world.
Pentecost, which occurs on the 50th day after Easter Sunday, celebrates the descend of the Holy Spirit on earth after the sacrifice of Jesus, whose blood is precisely represented by the red rose petals.
A mass starting at 10:30 am will be part of the liturgy of course.

MATISSE’S ARABESQUE ON EXHIBIT UNTIL JUNE!

MATISSE’S ARABESQUE ON EXHIBIT UNTIL JUNE!

Spring in Rome marks the beginning of a few important exhibitions, that at Scuderie del Quirinale being dedicated to the French artist Henri Matisse.
“Matisse. Arabesque” focuses on a particular aspect of the painter’s production, that is the so called “arabesque” motif, a type of decorative pattern either geometric or undulating which eriches a great number of Matisse’s works. The inspiration to include this kind of element derives from Matisse interest in Oriental cultures, with which he came across during some journeys and during his staying in Paris as well, a multicultural centre since long before his time.
The exhibit will be open until June 21st: from Sunday to Thursday 10am – 8pm; Friday and Saturday 10am to 10.30pm. Monday closed. Ticktes range from € 6 to € 12.

THE SWISS GUARD TURNS 509 YEARS!

THE SWISS GUARD TURNS 509 YEARS!

The Swiss Guard of the Pope turned 509 years last week.
On 22 January fell indeed the anniversary of their hiring at the Holy Seat: it was 1506 when Pope Julius II recruited a guarnison of soldiers from today’s Switzerland for his own safeguard in the Vatican. Since then they kept serving him with loyalty until today, linked to him by an oath which includes life sacrifice and which they didn’t hesitate to respect many times: in 1527, for instance, on occasion of the so called “Sack of Rome”, when out of 189 soldiers, only 42 survived to protect the then Pope. Coming closer to our times, the Swiss Guard mantained its loyalty to the Holy Seat even when the Papal State was deprived of its political and territorial powers by the new born Italian State, in 1861.
A little folkloric note: the Swiss Guard’s old fashioned uniform is not as ancient as we might think, being the fruit of a design which dates back to 1914, when the corp underwent major reforms. The new outfit was inspired to Raffaello’s drawings though, from which thing it derives its clear Renaissance looking.
