GET SET FOR THE ROME MARATHON!

maratona If you love fitness we have great news for you: the Rome marathon is just around the corner and we’re sure you don’t want to miss this unique experience.

Of course the great appeal of this marathon is the possibility to enjoy some of the most captivating views of the Eternal City: the runners will start the race at Campo de’ Fiori, following a course that will take them to Testaccio, one of the most traditional quartiers of Rome; along the legendary Tiber River and to Piazza del Popolo and the Spanish Steps to finish with the breath-taking view of the Colosseum.

To get all the details about the race, check the official website of the maramarathonbestthon. And in case you don’t feel like taking the 40-kilometer challenge, the same day there will be a 4-kilometer race called Roma Fun Run, open to anybody willing to have a great time and admire the beauty of the Eternal City from a different point of view. The inscriptions  for Roma Fun Run will be open until the day before the Marathon, and it will be possible to sign-in in the Marathon Village at the Palazzo dei Congresi Eur, near the subway station EUR Fermi. The inscription fee is seven euros.

Besides the millenary magic of Rome, there will be a couple of special reasons to at least keep an eyleaderofthepacke on the Marathon. The motto of the race this year is “Start Your Dreams”, and that’s exactly what three participants of the race will do. Luwis Masunda is a professional runner from Zimbabwe, but due to the economic crisis on his country,  travelling abroad to take part in a marathon was an impossible dream until the organizers of the Rome Marathon decided to invite him. Another athlete, Gary Latella is a French young man who suffers from a strange disease. He started running “to feel independent”, and has runned some half-marathons, but Rome will be his first full 40-kilometer race. Finally, Betty Jean McHugh is an 82-years old grandmother from Canada who holds the best time in the world for her category. Spotting her during the race won’t be a problem: she will be wearing the number 1927, like the year when she was born.

As you know, travelling abroad for an event like this can be difficult and logistically exasperating. A wise thing to do in these cases is find accommodation in a well-located and conveniently-priced hotel, and Yes Hotel and Hotel Des Artistes fill all the requirements!

Football in Rome

Francesco Totti

As you probably know football is the most popular sport in Italy and also Rome goes crazy about it.
A magical way to start a conversation with a Roman or an Italian is talking about football. They’ll give you their insights, and will ask about your own national team, and don’t be surprised if they know the name and reputation of many of your players: almost every Italian is a soccer expert.

Rome has two football teams, and of course they’re each other’s worst enemy. Lazio is the oldest one. The team takes its name from the geographical region where Rome is located. It was founded in 1900 and its colors are pale blue and white, and from the beginning didn’t seem to like its “sister”. In fact, as we’ll see, Roma, the other team in the city was created from the union of all the soccer clubs in the capital –well, all but Lazio whose president rejected the idea, stating that Lazio was more a “moral institution” than a mere football club.

Football game Rome Italy

As we’ve seen before, Roma was founded in 1927 with the union of three football teams: Roman, Fortitudo and Alba Audace. The idea was to put together the best Roman talents in football to compete with the powerful northern teams (like Juventus or Inter) that, to this day, win almost every championship.

If you are an observer keep your eyes open when you walk in Rome: you’re very likely to see murals and the yellow-red crest of the team painted everywhere. That’s because Roma won its third championship in 2001 and Romans took the streets in ecstasy celebrating for days, painting the streets and participating in a huge concert in the Circus Maximus.

Nowadays the symbol of Roma is its capitan, Francesco Totti. Check him very well, because if you come to Rome you’ll see his photograph everywhere!
Lazio and Roma share the same stadium: the Stadio Olimpico. To get there is very easy if you’re staying in a well-located hotel like the Yes Hotel or Hotel Des Artistes. All you have to do is take the A subway line from termini, get off at Flaminio Station (Piazza del popolo) , and there take the tram 225.

Lazio Soccer Team
Of course feeling in person the experience of a football game would be very interesting if you want to understand the Italians, but if you’re planning to attend a match it would be wise to ask a local first: there are certain games outright dangerous because of the rivalries between teams (and i mean real danger) and besides buying a ticket isn’t so easy because of the Italian laws, so is better to get some help.

Rome – Something for everyone

 arch-of-constantine.jpg

Rome has got it all. For the young, the old, families and couples. Whether you are backpacking or you are here for an extended stay. If you are interested in architecture, history, and have a passion for food then this city is definetly for you.

However these are not the only distractions that can be found in this ancient giant of a city that needs several lifetimes to be explored and discovered.

There are also several different periods of history all captured in time and preserved and which can be seen literally in the hundreds of buildings monuments and churches. Renaissance, Baroque and ancient imperial buildings stand side by side and it seems that the town planning of the city was an afterthought.

 pizza.jpg

Large piazzas and shopping streets attract tourists and locals alike. Gelato and pizza are the order of the day and coffee seems to be drunk like water.

Traffic seems to be flowing constantly and scooters are everywhere. Sirens are always wailing and hooters are blaring at every traffic intersection.

However all is not chaos and noise. Solace can be found in the Villa Borghese park and in the other green areas found in the city. If the kids are with you then their energy can be spent rollerblading are using the bicycles that are available to hire in the park. If you are feeling especially brave you can hire a segway and go for a spin in Piazza del Popolo.

 caffe.jpg

Trastevere is a popular night spot crowded with bars and clubs and where the partying carries on into the wee hours with total abandon. Another area which is popular with the younger crowd because it is close to the university is San Lorenzo. There are also many winebars and pubs crammed into this spot.

Shopping here is like breathing. You have to do it. Via del Corso, Via Condotti, Piazza di Spagna and Via Nazionale are just some of the more well known of the numerous places you can go to sate your appetite and shop to your hearts content. Prada, Gucci, Armani, Versace and Bulgari are all here.

 climbing-gran-sasso.jpg

When you feel like a break from the city the beaches are not far from the city and they are really easy to get to with public transport. Wind surfing, kite surfing and the good old surfboard can be used along the coastline too. The Abruzzo National Park is also not far away.

There are many trails to go hiking and mountain biking and there is also so much climbing that can be done here. In winter it is also great to go skiing here as well as in Campo Felice which is closer to Rome than the park if you have less time.

 termini-station.jpg

The Province of Lazio, in which Rome is located is a perfect place from which to make your daytrips too. As it is situated roughly half way between the north and the south of Italy.

The main train station,Termini, located near our hotel, is perfect for this as trains from all over the country arrive and depart from here. The Leonardo Express also departs from here directly to Fiumicino airport ( Leonardo da Vinci ). There are also many bus shuttles that also depart from the station to Ciampino airport.

Well now that you have decided where you are going all you have to do now is make up your mind when. Looking forward to seeing you in Rome. Have a safe trip.
