Music in Rome

Around The World In 80 Minutes With The Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio

As we have said somewhere else, we are unabashed fans of the Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio.

Their story would be worth telling all the same had they disbanded after the release of the remarkable documentary that tells the tale of Mario Tronco, the director who assembled the orchestra recluting foreign musicians who lived in Rome -many of them in the multicultural neighbourhood of Piazza Vittorio- and brought their own sensibilities and personal idiosincracies into the mix.

But the Orchestra was more than a one-off, and it’s ready to perform its most recent project: an 80-minute musical journey through time, space and culture, a feat they are more than well-suited to accomplish.

The Orchestra will be playing at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome from January 21 to 26, 2014.

The Auditorium Parco della Musica

One of my favorite venues for Concerts in Rome is the Auditorium Parco della Musica. They present performers who represent the best of different music styles: classical music, jazz, latin music and electronic music as well.

But the Auditorium is an attraction well worth seeing by itself. It was designed by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano and is structured in 3 beetle-shaped units that function as independent music halls. The complex includes also a bookshop, a bar and a restaurant, making it the ideal spot for a lovely evening before or after a concert.

To reach the Auditorium from Yes Hotel or Hotel Des Artistes, take the red subway line from Termini and get off at the station Flaminio, from there take the tram 2 and get off at the station Apollodoro.

Duran Duran visit Rome

One of the biggest bands of the 80’s and a driving force in the MTV fueled “Second British Invasion” of America, Duran Duran have made a rather large splash in the music industry. While they were generally considered part of the New Romantic scene along with bands such as Spandau Ballet when they first emerged, they later shed this image. The band worked with fashion designers to build a sharp and elegant image that earned them the nickname “the prettiest boys in rock”.imagesCAWVYKGH1

The group was formed by Nick Rhodes, John Taylor and Stephen Duffy, with the later addition of Roger Taylor and, after numerous personnel changes, Andy Taylor and Simon Le Bon. Their controversial videos, which included partial nudity and suggestions of sexuality, became popular in the early 1980s on the then-new music video channel MTV. Duran Duran were among the first bands to have their videos shot by professional directors with 35 mm film movie cameras, which gave their videos a much more polished look. In 1984, the band were early innovators with video technology in their live stadium shows.

This summer Duran Duran come to Rome, to Foro Italico, Piazza Lauro De Bosis. You can catch a concert on the 18th of July at 20:00, make sure to book those tickets soon and remember to contact Hotel Des Artistes to get a great deal on one of our rooms.

New Perspectives in Tango: Gotan Project in Rome

-This May the famous French-Argentinian ensemble will be updating Roman fans on their contemporary take on Tango.

Gotan Project are coming back to Rome to please the local tango lovers. Next 16th of May 2011 the group will present their  last album “Tango 3.0” at Atlantico Live. This album opens a new music era  for the group, because they managed to mix the traditional sounds of tango and the classic folk argentinian music with electronic sonorities, and sounds from blues and cool-jazz.

Launched by an idea of Philipe Cohen Solal, Eduardo Makaroff and Christoph H Muelle, “Tango 3.0” presents a voyage of melodies from New Orleans and Nashville, and through by the alleys of New York.

In their new album which includes the single “La Gloria”,  they have the opportunity to collaborate with Victor Hugo Morales,  the famous sport commentator of Messico ’86,   who changes his famous phrase “Gooool!” into “Goooo-tan”.

So prepare your senses  to welcome Gotan Project for a vibrating, full of power concert in Rome. You cannot miss it.
