Unfit to lead: a history of the worst leaders in ancient Rome

Nero_pushkin

The history of Rome has its share of legendary condottieri like Julius Caesar, by example, but on the other hand is also filled with people who put themselves in a position of leadership through cunning and deception even though they were obviously unfit to lead due to their insanity and/or sheer ignorance. Here’s a list for you!

Nero: He famously played the fiddle while Rome burned. Talk about bad government! He is now a symbol for all things decadent and insane.

Caligula: Did you know that his nickname originated from the small military boots crafted for him when he was a child? Obviously such care went to waste, since Caligula has gone down in history as one of the most demented rulers ever. He almost had Incitatus, his favorite horse, named a consul!
bbbb
Silvio Berlusconi: Corruption? Check. Deception? Check. Decadence? Check. Silvio is just too happy to keep the old tradition of unfit leaders alive, all while keeping a smile and charming his way through courts.

If you want to admire the relics of bad leadership, visit Rome and stay in Hotel Des Artistes or Yes Hotel!

Damon Albarn, The Gorilla King in Rome

damon-albarn_ex560x350

Damon Albarn, frontman of Blur and creator of Gorillaz, is one of the most influential living rock musicians. His artistic output has shaped and sometimes predated some of the most important departures in pop music.

Albarn will be playing in Rome at the Auditorium Parco della Musica next July 14 2014 as a part of July Sounds Good, one of our favorite music festivals in Rome.
Don’t miss Damon’s performance, and don’t miss the most convenient rates in Rome by making a reservation at Yes Hotel or Hotel Des Artistes,

Around The World In 80 Minutes With The Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio

web

As we have said somewhere else, we are unabashed fans of the Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio.

Their story would be worth telling all the same had they disbanded after the release of the remarkable documentary that tells the tale of Mario Tronco, the director who assembled the orchestra recluting foreign musicians who lived in Rome -many of them in the multicultural neighbourhood of Piazza Vittorio- and brought their own sensibilities and personal idiosincracies into the mix.

But the Orchestra was more than a one-off, and it’s ready to perform its most recent project: an 80-minute musical journey through time, space and culture, a feat they are more than well-suited to accomplish.

The Orchestra will be playing at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome from January 21 to 26, 2014.

An Opera Summer At The Baths Of Caracalla

opera

Every summer, when heat arrives, the Opera house of Rome moves to the suggesting setting of the Baths of Caracalla. These are the concerts we are looking forward to:

TERRA E CIELO / CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA

Remember the opera at the end of The Godfather III? That’s Cavalleria Rusticana. If it’s good enough for Don Corleone I’m sure is good for you too.

CARMEN – L’ARLESIENNE
Bizet’s masterpiece coupled with one of his less-known efforts.

ENNIO MORRICONE
The career of the composer of the soundtracks of many classic Spaghetti Westerns has been re-evaluated after years of relative neglect.

TOSCA

A tale of love, passion and treasure set in Rome in the year 1800.

Robert Doisneau, a Parisian in Rome

C-Usersa.suppaDesktopImg_Doisneau1_Il-Bacio-dellHotel-de-Vi

If you don’t know Robert Doiseneau we are sure you know the image illustrating this post.

Doisneau is a legendary photographer, famous for his special relationship with Paris and his keen eye for the unusual. “I don’t photograph life as it is, but life as I would like it to be”, he said once.

Given Doisneau’s knack for the surreal is almost ironic that his most famous image is  touching but at the same time  ordinary and as old as mankind. Maybe it just goes to prove that love can be as good as anything we wan imagine.

The Exposition Robert Doisneaau, Paris in Liberté will take place  from September 29 at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, located only a short walk away from Hotel Des Artistes or Yes Hotel.

Batman in Rome

the-dark-knight-rises

The fans of the Dark Knight visiting Rome are in luck: they’ll be able to learn more about their hero and at the same time get away from the Roman heat.

Until August 29 a collection of items used during the filming of The Dark Knight Rises will be on display at Piazza dei Ravennati in Ostia, a  beach town located just outside Rome. The exhibition includes a couple of Bat-vehicles, and the costume worn by the new Catwoman, Anne Hathaway– a pice many will find, well, intriguing.
Also in Ostia but in a different location, at Piazza Anco Marzio, a selection photographs taken during the filming of the Nolan Trilogy  will be on exhibition as well.

To reach Ostia from Hotel Des Artistes or Yes Hotel is quite easy and cheap: just take the blue subway line at Castro Pretorio from Des Artistes or at Termini from Yes Hotel and get off at the station Piramide; from there you have trains leaving for Ostia every 20 minutes. Once on the train, get off at the station Lido Centro to reach the exhibitions
