Making up the heel and spur of Italy's boot, Apulia, Puglia in Italian, is 400 km from north to south. Perhaps most distinctive are the Saracenic kasbah-like quarters of many towns and cities, the one at Bari being the biggest and most atmospheric. Polignano a Mare

The inland Trulli 
Trulli in Alberobello district to the southeast of Bari is one of Italy's oddest enclaves. The origins of the Trulli go back to the 13th century, they are built of limestone without mortar. Some are painted with symbols. The center of Trulli country is Alberobello.
South of Lecce is some of the region's best sandy coastline and a handful of samll fishing towns such as Otranto and Gallipoli.
Forming the spur of the boot, the Gargano Promontory

its 600 natural caves (Promontorio del Gargano) is a land of whitewashed coastal towns.
Food: Handmade orecchiette pasta! Apulia's olive oils are the best in the world, and of course the pomodorini pugliesi (small tomatoes).
