Lombardy, Italy's richest and most developed region, often seems to have more in common with its northern European neighbours than with the rest of Italy. Milan 
Milan Cathedralis capital of all that is new in Italy. The great Renaissance cities of the Po plain are Pavia, Cremona and Mantua.
To the north, Lombardy is quite different, the lakes and low mountains of the edge of the Alps sheltering fewer historic towns, though Bergamo

The area around the lakes of Maggiore, Como and Garda has long been popular tourist territory, and wealthy Italian holiday-makers and day-trippers are much in evidence. Lake Maggiore is especially attractive in the Stresa area, with the beautiful islands Isola Madre, Isola Bella
