Virtually every acre of the Veneto bears the imprint of Venetian rule. The area is sometimes called the Venetian Arc because it is dominated by Venice
Gran Canal in Venicelike Lazio is dominated by Rome.
After Venice, it's Padua and Verona that are the main attraction. Verona
Juliet's Balcony
in Veronais the largest city of the mainland Veneto and has a romantic reputation thanks to it being the setting of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. The Arena di Verona is one of the largest and best preserved Roman amphitheatres anywhere, built in the 1st century AD. Padua (Padova in Italian) is not immediately the most alluring city in northern Italy. It is, however, one of the most ancient, and plentiful evidence remains of its impressive lineage.
The town of Vicenza
Villa Almerico-Capra
Vicenza, still partly enclosed by medieval walls, is an amalgam of Gothic and Classical buildings that today looks much as it did when the last major phase of construction came to an end at the close of the eighteenth century. One of the undiscovered gems in the Veneto is Treviso
Treviso, a charming quiet town with an easy-going air that is also an ideal jumping-off point both for Venice and for the northern Veneto.
Food: Vialone Nano Veronese rice. Radicchio of Treviso, the bitter purple leaf accompanying many Italian salads. White asparagus from Bassano del Grappa. The Gallina Padovana, or Padovan chicken. Monte Veronese cheese. Bardolino olives and wine.
Wine: Inama Vin Soave Classico, Remo Farina Bianco di Custoza, Anselmi San Vincenzo, Zenato Lugana San Benedetto, Lagaria Pinot Grigio delle Venezie
